The Language Forgotten: A Father's Tale is a podcast that I made in the gateway course of my Minor in Writing. It was modeled after the NPR podcast series Radiolab and analyzes the loss of my father’s first language, Farsi. The podcast is a remediation of a Radiolab blog post I made earlier in the course, which is linked in the grey box below. I chose to do a podcast for this project mostly because I was obsessed with Radiolab at the time and wanted to investigate an interesting scientific topic. After considering a few topics, I chose to pursue this one because it allowed me to learn about my father and the science of language. Looking back, I am very proud of this project. I think I did a great job mimicking the tone, style, and voice of Radiolab. Additionally, my use of music was appropriate and effective in engaging emotion.

In the end, I was able to make a statement about the limitations of science—a concept that has inspired my interest in writing. Furthermore, through crafting this piece, I came to understand my father a little bit more than I had before the project. This project combines many aspects of multimedia art—writing ability, musical knowledge (thank you Steve Reich for your perfectly podcast-ic compositions), and mimicry—into something effective and persuasive, and I know it improved my ability to construct cohesive messages through my work.
